Orlando Pirates reach fifth consecutive MTN8 final after 4-0 aggregate win over Sekhukhune

Orlando Pirates have reached the MTN8 final for the fifth consecutive year after a 3-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the second leg of their semi-final tie at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.

The Buccaneers registered a 4-0 aggregate win after a 1-0 win in the first leg tie in Polokwane.

Orlando Pirates have become the first team in the history of the league to reach the MTN8 final for five consecutive years.

Pirates settle the tie before half-time

The Soweto giants were overwhelming favorites to win the second leg tie after hosting the first leg clash in Polokwane.

They started brightly and were on the attack from the beginning of the match before registering their first goal in the 37th minute.

Thapelo Mokobodi scored beautifully after being found by a glorious cross from Yanela Mbuthuma from the left flank to put Pirates 2-0 up on aggregate.

They were quick to score a second as they cashed in on their first good attacking move of the match.

A sharp counter-attack after a corner from Sekhukhune saw Gamphani Lungu scoring his first goal of the season from inside the box to make it 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

Pirates went into the break 2-0 up after their first half goals.

Sekhukhune push after the break

The home team had already secured their place in the final and were happy to see out the game as Sekhukhune came out strongly in the second half.

Sipho Chaine was constantly called into action as Babina Noko threatened but Pirates’ defense showed their class and steel to see out the game.

The visitors made a good start to the second half as they made several substitutions as early as the hour mark and pushed forward in numbers in search of a goal.

Their efforts bore no fruit until the 89th minute when defender Kamogelo Sebelebele scored his first goal of the season.

Substitute Tshepang Moremi played a big role in laying the ball across goal for the onrushing Sebelebele who made no mistake in finishing to complete his brace and hand the Pirates a 3-0 win.

Pirates make MTN8 history

Victory ensured the Pirates will contest the MTN8 final for the fifth year in a row as they make history in the process.

The Buccaneers will face either Mamelodi Sundowns or Golden Arrows in the decisive match after the two teams drew 1-1 in their first leg semi-final clash.

Golden Arrows are currently leading 1-0 as of the time of writing and will host the second leg match on Sunday at Ellis Park.

The final of the 2026 edition of the MTN8 will be played on Saturday, 10th October.

Pirates continue dominance against Sekhukhune

The latest victory over their rivals comes after a three-match unbeaten league run against Babina Noko as they have not conceded a goal in any of the encounters.

The MTN8 match was settled by Pirates scoring the most important goals and seeing off the visitors after a resilient second half display.

Even though the visitors will feel hard done by after coming so close to avoiding a fifth consecutive defeat against Pirates, not much could be done as the hosts registered the win and advance to the final for a record-breaking fifth consecutive year.
