Kaizer Chiefs Reportedly Consider Richard Ofori Amid Brandon Petersen Scrutiny

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly eyeing a move for goalkeeping legend Richard Ofori.

The development comes as the former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu shot-stopper has extensive experience in the PSL which could appeal to Amakhosi management.

Although interest in the 37-year-old has been reported, there is as yet no confirmation of a deal being completed or Ofori’s personal terms being finalised.

Richard Ofori Emmerges as a Possible Chiefs Signing

Ofori has played across the PSL for some of the league’s biggest clubs.

The veteran keeper has also established himself as a reliable performer in the league and could be an intriguing addition to Amakhosi.

The reported interest means Chiefs could be set to add considerable depth to their goalkeeping department.

For now, it should be noted that the reports are only that – reports.

Brandon Petersen Faces Increased Scrutiny

Meanwhile, Chiefs’ first-choice ‘keeper Brandon Petersen has also been facing increased levels of scrutiny after a number of errors in recent games.

The position is one where criticism is quick to follow errors, and the spotlight is intensely focused on goalkeepers due to the single opportunity to stop scores of shots during a match.

Petersen has had a number of stellar campaigns in his career, but recent criticism from supporters has sparked debate about whether he needs competition at the position.

It is important to note that this does not necessarily mean that he will be sold.

However, signing another goalkeeper would certainly provide further competition for the position while adding to the depth in the squad.

Ronwen Williams Defends Petersen

Ofori is not the first to face criticism as a goalkeeper in South Africa, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana custodian Ronwen Williams defending his charges.

Williams highlighted the pressure that goalkeepers face in the modern game, and his comments could prove to be another challenge for Petersen’s position.

It is a reality of the position that errors by goalkeepers will always be magnified despite the incredible challenges of the role.

What Does Ofori Bring to Chiefs?

If Ofori can convince Amakhosi that he can provide competition for the number one jersey, then experience is his main asset.

An experienced campaigner can help provide competition for positions within a squad as well as give managers options when it comes to choosing line-ups.

By adding experience, the manager also has the assurance of having another reliable option in goal in case of injury.

However, it should also be noted that merely adding a new goalkeeper will not fix problems in defence.

The organisational qualities of Chiefs’ defenders in front of the backline are vital if they want to improve their results at the back.

Ofori Still Only a Reported Target

For the moment, reports of Kaizer Chiefs’ interest in Ofori should be taken as such.

A number of transfer factors will need to fall into place before a move can happen, starting with Chiefs making an approach for the player.

It will also depend on the availability of the player as well as whether the two clubs can reach an agreement over personal terms.

Until then, Ofori will still only be a reported signing of Kaizer Chiefs.

What Now for Kaizer Chiefs?

The situation at the back for Amakhosi will be one to watch.

If Ofori can convince Chiefs that he is the right fit for the club, his arrival would certainly create competition for the number one jersey and provide the manager with an alternative option for matches.

For now, Ofori’s reported interest will only be a minor distraction for Petersen as he looks to respond to the recent criticism with improved performances.
