Former Mamelodi Sundowns Star Lucas Ribeiro Reportedly Set for Esperance Move

Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro could be on the verge of a fresh chapter in his career, with reports linking the Brazilian attacker to Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis.
Ribeiro is reportedly closing in on a move after leaving Spanish club Cultural Leonesa, with North African media suggesting that negotiations are at an advanced stage.
Esperance Closing In
According to reports from Nessma Sport, Espérance have reached an agreement to sign Ribeiro on a three-year contract.
The deal is also said to involve a player exchange with Al Ittihad, although the finer details of the arrangement have yet to be officially confirmed.
If completed, the move would see the Brazilian join one of Africa’s most successful clubs as they continue strengthening their squad for domestic and continental competitions.
A Career That Has Taken Several Turns
Ribeiro left Mamelodi Sundowns in August 2025 while a legal dispute surrounding his contract was ongoing. At the time of his departure, his agreement with the South African champions reportedly ran until June 2028.
Following his exit from Sundowns, the attacker moved to Spain with Cultural Leonesa, but his spell there proved short-lived after being released by the club.
Now, the 27-year-old appears ready for another opportunity to revive his career.
A Fresh Start in North Africa?
Joining Espérance would give Ribeiro the chance to compete for league honours in Tunisia and feature in the CAF Champions League, one of Africa’s premier club competitions.
The Tunisian giants are renowned for challenging for trophies every season, and the Brazilian’s pace, creativity and attacking versatility could make him a valuable addition if the transfer is finalised.
For Ribeiro, the move would also offer an opportunity to rebuild momentum after an eventful period that included his departure from Sundowns, a spell in Spain and uncertainty over his future.
Can Ribeiro Make an Impact?
There is little doubt that Ribeiro possesses the technical ability to succeed in North African football.
Espérance’s attacking style could suit his strengths, and regular playing time may help him rediscover the form that once made him a highly rated player.
However, adapting quickly to a new league, a different football culture and the pressure of representing one of Africa’s biggest clubs will be crucial.
If he settles well, Ribeiro could become another South American player to leave his mark on North African football.
