Morocco Stun Netherlands on Penalties to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Morocco kept their FIFA World Cup dream alive with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands after an intense 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey. The hard-fought win sends the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada on 4 July for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands looked set to progress after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, putting the Dutch within touching distance of the knockout stage. However, Morocco showed remarkable resilience and refused to surrender.

With the match entering stoppage time, Issa Diop rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan supporters and forcing the contest into extra time.

Despite both teams creating opportunities during the additional 30 minutes, neither side could find a winning goal, sending the Round of 32 clash to a nerve-racking penalty shootout.

Morocco’s experienced goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved decisive from the spot. The shot-stopper made a crucial save before Ismael Saibari confidently converted the winning penalty, sealing a memorable 3-2 shootout triumph and knocking out one of Europe’s traditional football giants.

The victory adds another historic chapter to Morocco’s growing legacy on the world stage. After becoming the first African nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final in 2022, the Atlas Lions have once again underlined their ability to compete with and overcome some of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Morocco will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 showdown against Canada on 4 July, with a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals at stake. Confidence will be high as the Atlas Lions look to continue their impressive run and create even more history for African football.
